54% of Europeans believe that the relationship will improve after Trump leaves office

According to a survey conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations among residents of 19 European countries and published on June 10, Europeans’ trust in the United States has reached a historic low.

Only 11% of respondents now consider the United States an ally, compared with 22% in November 2024.
Even more significantly, 25% view it as a rival or an adversary.

When asked whether they consider the United States an ally, a necessary partner, a rival, or an adversary, here are the responses (in %) from residents of ten European countries:

In most countries, the findings are stark:

  • 25.8% of Swiss respondents consider Americans to be adversaries, as do 22.5% of Spaniards and 20.1% of Danes;
  • only 6.1% of Italians, 7.6% of French respondents, and 8% of Germans consider them allies.

Only Poles, of whom 76.3% see Americans as allies or partners, and Hungarians, of whom 69.1% share this view, maintain strong confidence in the United States.

Most believe the transatlantic relationship will “likely improve” once Trump’s presidency is over

This is reflected in the fact that 54% of residents across 10 European countries believe the relationship will improve after Trump leaves office:
