GROK: 3 million sexualized images in 11 days

French courts are expecting Elon Musk today for a voluntary hearing.

The investigation concerns potential violations of French law by the social network X and by the artificial intelligence tool GROK, which is integrated into the X platform.

In a statement published in February, the Paris prosecutor listed seven criminal offenses under investigation.

An investigation by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), which examined a random sample of 20,000 images generated by GROK between December 29, 2025 and January 8, 2026, identified 12,995 sexualized images—representing 65% of the sample—including 101 sexualized images likely depicting children.

Extrapolated to the 4.5 million images generated by GROK, the study estimates that 3 million sexualized images were produced by the AI, including 23,338 sexualized images likely involving children during the 11-day period analyzed.

In addition to these 23,338 images, Grok generated approximately 9,900 additional sexualized images of children in cartoon or animated form.

According to the prosecutor’s office, these potential violations could have been prevented with stricter moderation rules, particularly through the SAFER tool, which the X platform stopped funding in 2025. Authorities report that between June and October 2025, there was an 81.4% decrease in reports related to child sexual abuse material concerning France.

Other potential issues under this preliminary investigation include possible manipulation of the X platform’s algorithm aimed at influencing users’ opinions. According to a study published on February 18, 2026 in the journal Nature, users who selected the “For You” feed had a 20% chance of seeing conservative content (right-wing or far-right) and only a 3.1% chance of seeing liberal content. Posts from traditional media were also 58% less likely to appear in this feed.
