With 38% of the vote, Viktor Orbán loses power in Hungary

According to a count covering 99% of polling stations, Péter Magyar of the pro-European Tisza party wins the Hungarian parliamentary elections by a wide margin, with 53.06% of the vote, compared to 38.4% for Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz.

The far-right party Mi Hazánk is expected to obtain 6% of the vote.

Tisza wins 138 seats, compared to 55 seats for Fidesz, out of the 199 seats in the Hungarian parliament.

Voter turnout reaches a record, with 79.50% of registered voters.

In the previous parliamentary elections in 2022, Viktor Orbán had received 54% of the vote, which gave him 135 seats.

Viktor Orbán had held the position of Prime Minister for 16 years, and adding the 4 years he led the Hungarian government between 1998 and 2002, he has governed Hungary for 20 of the last 28 years.

Pedro Sánchez, in office for 8 years, thus becomes the longest-serving European leader currently heading an executive government.

Péter Magyar broke away from Viktor Orbán in 2024, notably denouncing corruption within the regime.

According to Transparency International, which ranks countries based on the “Corruption Perceptions Index” (CPI), Hungary is ranked 84th, with a score of 40. Denmark ranks 1st with a score of 89, while South Sudan ranks last with a score of 9.
