Back-to-Back Champions League Titles: PSG on Top of European Football

By winning the Champions League on May 30 against Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain became the first French club to win two Champions League titles.

Olympique de Marseille is the only other French club to have won the European title (in 1993).

A Club Among Europe’s Greatest

Since the creation of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1955, which became the Champions League in 1992, only 22 European clubs have managed to win the competition at least once.

With its second title, PSG now joins the group of 14 clubs that have won the competition at least twice:

  • Real Madrid: 15 titles
  • AC Milan: 7
  • Bayern Munich: 6
  • Liverpool: 6
  • FC Barcelona: 5
  • Ajax Amsterdam: 4
  • Manchester United: 3
  • Inter Milan: 3
  • Benfica: 2
  • Juventus: 2
  • Nottingham Forest: 2
  • FC Porto: 2
  • Chelsea: 2
  • Paris Saint-Germain: 2

A Rare Achievement: Two Consecutive Titles

By winning the title twice in a row, PSG joins the 8 clubs that had previously achieved this feat:

  • Real Madrid: 5 consecutive titles in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, then 3 consecutive titles in 2016, 2017, 2018.
  • Bayern Munich: 1974, 1975, 1976.
  • Ajax Amsterdam: 1971, 1972, 1973.
  • Benfica: 1961, 1962.
  • Inter Milan: 1964, 1965.
  • AC Milan: 1989, 1990.
  • Nottingham Forest: 1979, 1980.

However, France Still Trails Far Behind in Total Champions League Titles Won

  • Spain has won 20,
  • England 15,
  • Italy 10,
  • Germany 8,
  • France 3,
  • Romania 1,
  • Scotland 1,
  • Yugoslavia / Serbia 1.

Bringing the total to approximately €200 million.

  • LOSC Lille (3rd) / AS Monaco (7th): budgets ranging from €140 million to €180 million.
  • The rest of the league: budgets between €40 million and €80 million, representing financial resources 10 to 20 times smaller than those of the Parisian club.
